Jesus Is Coming

Topic: Jesus Is Coming

Sub Topic: Lay It Down, What Will You Lay Down for the King?

Scripture: Matthew 21:1-17

Support Scriptures: 1 Peter 5:6,7; Matt 16:25,26; Gal 2:20; Matt 11:28-30

I. Vs. 1-5 Disciples are told to retrieve donkey and colt without being told the complete details
of what Jesus was planning to do. Often, we are told to obey God without knowing all the
details. Trust Him! (Proverbs 3:5-7) This was done in order to fulfill the Old Testament
prophet Zechariah (Zec 9:9). It is good to know that all the acts of Jesus are foretold and not
just made up on the spot. He (Jesus) said I only do those things I see the Father do (John
5:10).
II. Vs. 6-9 They obey and place their garments upon the donkey and colt for the Lord’s use and
also for His support and comfort. The multitudes follow suit and place their garments and
palm leaves on the road for the Lord to travel on. They cry Hosanna and give praise unto the
Lord. Some truths to take from this section of the text:
a. We are called to lay down our stuff for the use of the King (Jesus). What will you lay
down for the King? Here are some suggestions: our ego, our intellect, our title, our
pedigree (race), yes our race (Phil 3:5-11; Rom 12:3; Prov 16:18,19) . When we fail to
lay these things down at the feet of Jesus, they get in the way of our purpose ( being a
witness and making disciples Matt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8).

III. The conclusion of the matter is that God is looking for us to be like Jesus. Phil 2:5-11 tells us
that He Jesus humbled himself even unto death, the death of the cross. Yes the Lord is
calling for us to “let that mind be in you”. He wants us to lay down our life. Jesus says this in
Matthew 16:25,26 (“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for My sake will find it. What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses
his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Lay it down for the King.
