Wednesday Night Bible Study (Notes)

John 3:25-36
04/03/2024

 I. Vs 25-26 “The dispute and disruption”
a. Bringing dissention (Prov. 6-16-19) We know that this was dissention because it caused panic
among John’s disciples. Because of the report given by his disciples we know that it was the intent
of the messengers to disrupt the ministry of John. Let’s see how he responds.

II. Vs 27-28 “Spirit-filled response to dissention”
a. Being filled with the Holy Spirit, John responds to his panic-stricken followers with the wisdom from
the Holy Spirit. We know that this is wisdom from the Holy Spirit because it places God as the
sovereign provider of all things (Psalms 24:1-3; James 1:17). Jesus later backs his response up in
(John 6:35-40). Note: Remember, God has given us this ministry (1Cor 3:5-7)
b. John then reminds them to not place him in a higher place than he was. He reminds them that he is
under Jesus, not Jesus, but His servant (Malachi 3:1; John 1:19-27).

III. Vs 29 “The Bridegroom and His bride”
a. Christ is the Bridegroom and the church is the bride (Ephesians 5:25-32; 2Cor 11:2;)
b. The friend of the Bridegroom is sent to serve and keep the bride safe until the Groom comes for
her. This is the service of church leadership (Eph 4:11-16)
c. John is showing himself to be a faithful servant (Matthew 24:45-5)
d. John finds joy by staying in constant communication with the Bridegroom. This is our pattern in
keeping our joy in the labor. Hear from the Lord frequently. Stay in His presence through prayer
(Matthew 6:5-15). And especially for those of us who are lead servants, “Feed His Sheep!” (Jn
21:15-17). Remember, that we are ministers (servants of reconciliation (2 Cor 5:17-2).

IV. Vs 30 “Jesus is everything.”
a. John shows us how to lower ourselves when it comes to serving. Your identity is not more important
than Jesus. His Kingdom must increase (Is 9:6,7). We carry His glory in broken vessels (2Cor 4:7).
We are the donkey being ridden on Palm Sunday (Matt 21:6-11). They’re cheering for Jesus, not
the donkey.

V. Vs 31-34 “A Greater Testimony”
a. Jesus is from above and His testimony is complete and perfect. Jesus tells us this in the Scriptures
(Jn 3:13; Jn 8:22,23; Col 1:15-18). What Jesus Here’s from the Father He makes known to His
servants (Jn 15:15).

VI. Vs 35-36 “Like Father Like Son”
a. Jesus is Sovereign and eternal (John 10:30; Col 2:9; Rev 1:8,11,18)
b. Jesus said that the man or woman who believes in Him will have eternal life (Jn 3:16), but wrath
awaits those who don’t believe (1Thes 1:10; 1Thess 5:9)
